Bernice has mostly written poems but is now exploring family stories. She wrote this childhood memory at an Auckland City Masterclass facilitated by Deborah in the Helensville Library.
On my first day of school mum walked with me to the top of Kelmarna Avenue and then she asked me to continue with my sister.
I didn't want to leave the comfort of my mother’s side.
I didn't want to be pushed out and into the big scary world.
I just was NOT ready to leave her side.
Upon reflection, maybe it was because she was busy with my younger twin brothers and I wanted more of her.
But, then, on the way, Mum showed me a light green cylinder shaped pencil case with a silver teethed zip.
Mum said, "Bernie if you go to school for five days in a row, I'll give you this pencil case."
And so I did go for five days.
And I did get the pencil case.
By then, I was okay going to school.
